Kenton County Parks & Recreation is hosting a NestWatch training for current and prospective Northern Kentucky Bluebird Trail monitors.
The training is slated for Saturday, April 13, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Kenton County Public Works, located at 420 Independence Station Road in Independence. A light lunch will also be served.
The informative meeting is for current nest box monitors, and those interested in volunteering, to help monitor the Northern Kentucky Bluebird Trail nest boxes during the breeding season from late-March through August.
Northern Kentucky Bluebird Trail Monitor and NestWatch Coordinator Chrisula Stone will present the training, featuring discussion and images of the Eastern Bluebird and other cavity-nesting birds.
Attendees will learn about the purpose and benefits of the NKY Bluebird Trail, along with an explanation of the tasks of a nest box monitor and some of the joys and heartbreaks of nest box monitoring.
Monitors typically operate in pairs, documenting observations for a series of nest boxes, including details regarding the first nest-building activity and the species utilizing each box. Each monitor will receive a packet of information and instructions on being a monitor.
Interested parties can register by April 12 through the online registration system.
